5 Day Family Summer Holiday

Day 1

Cooma – Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre (allow 1.5 to 2hours) to see and participate in:

  • Hands on interpretive exhibits & interactive displays
  • Informative films about the mighty Snowy Scheme
  • See real electricity generation
  • Take a turn on the “power bikes”
  • Enjoy a fresh coffee, tea & cakes at the coffee shop

After visiting the Hydro Centre, take a walk down the main street in Cooma to discover Centenial Park with the International Flag & Mosaic Time Walk, then stop to admire the “Man from Snowy River” Sculpture.

There are many different café’s and food outlets to grab a bite to eat in the park before making your way to Adaminaby for an afternoon of site seeing.

On arrival in Adaminaby, check into your accommodation that you have booked with the Snowy Mountatins Holiday Centre, then jump into your car to take a look at the sites.

Things to look at in and around Adaminaby:

  • Drive to Old Adaminaby and look at the remnants on the shores of Lake Eucumbene
  • Visit the historic buildings such as the Uniting Church which was built in the 1880’s
  • Take a stroll around the Lakeside in the village of Anglers Reach
  • Visit the Adaminaby Snowy Collection Museum

After the afternoon site seeing have some dinner at the local Bowling Club or the Bistro at the Snowgoose Hotel.

Day 2

Get ready for a fun filled day of activity, taking a fishing tour on Lake Eucumbene. Get ready for an early start to hit the Lake with Lake Eucumbene Fishing Charters, Mark will take you out on his boat, supply morning tea and the rest is up to the fish!

Head back into Adaminaby and have lunch from The Bakehouse, you can either sit down in the bakery or you can order a lunch pack and have a picnic on the lake side.

After lunch head out to the Murumbidgee River for a swim and a relax.

Day 3

Pack your car and grab your lunch pack from The Bakehouse or grab a few snags and a loaf of bread, and head to Kiandra and the Yarangobilly Caves for the day. There are coin operated BBQ’s available at the caves.

Stop at the historic ghost town of Kiandra. Kiandra is an abandonded gold mining town that had a population of over 15000. Kiandra is also known for being one of the first areas in Australia to have a ski lift.

Things to see at Kiandra:

  • View the Old Court House and other Huts along the way
  • 3 Mile Dam
  • View the native flora and fauna, the area is also an ideal place for bird watching & taking photos of the wild life, you will often see wild brumbies
  • Take one of the historical walking trails to view the relics of the Australian Pioneering History, including old mining equipment and old Grave sites

After viewing Kiandra, head to Yarangobilly caves for lunch, then enjoy all the caves have to offer.

Things to do at the caves:

  • Self guided tour of South Glory Cave
  • Guided tours of Jersey Cave or Jillabenan Cave. Both these caves date back to over 700,000 years
  • Take a swim in the Thermal Pools, which is 27 degrees all year round.There is a childrens wading pool and a 20 metre long pool

At the end of your day, drive onto Talbingo (only 20 minutes) where you can stay at Talbingo Tourist Park. You can either prepare your own meals or go to the Talbingo Country Club for dinner.

Day 4

Wake upto the beautiful mountain air in Talbingo with amazing views over Lake Jounama. Pack the car and head back up towards Selwyn Snowfields, drive to Australia’s Highest Town Cabramurra for morning tea. Take in the breath taking views of the Snowy Mountains from the lookouts around the town.

Continue driving to Khancoban, this is an hours drive. On arrival in Khancoban check into your accommodation booked by the Snowy Mountains Holiday Centre. Travel on to have a tour of the Murray 1 Power Station,this is the second largest power station in the region and is located 10 minutes outside of Khancoban.

Other things to do in Khancoban include:

  • White water rafting
  • Absailing
  • View “The Lady Rose Garden” which is a tribute to the Snowy Mountains Scheme

Day 5

Wake up in peaceful Khancoban and have a relaxing breakfast before heading down the Alpine Way towards Thredbo. Stop along the way to look at the following:

  • Scammel Spur Lookout, which has the most vertical view of Australia
  • Geehi, explore the hut built from stones hand picked from Swampy Plains River
  • Tom Groggin, to watch the Kangaroos

Once you arrive in Thredbo, take a senic ride on the Kosciuszko chair lift to the top.

  • Other activities to do in Thredbo:
  • Swimming Pool & waterslides
  • Bush walks
  • Tennis
  • Bobsled

From here you can either stay the night at Thredbo or continue on your way home.
